A friend of mine was selling this lovely little bookcase at a yard sale. It was dark brown and in need of some love. I immediately saw the potential. The legs were beautiful and the size was perfect to fit in any small spot. I love little bookcases that are not deep and are specifically thin so that one can just use them to add character to a room but not waste much space. I immediately painted it and was ready to fill it.
Whenever I go to anyone’s home, I love to find places that reflect the character of the homeowner. What part of the home most expresses who the owner is? This bookshelf is in my master bedroom. I had so much fun creating it and placing so much of my favorite things all in one spot. I love to look at it. I like to imagine what someone could guess about who I am just by how I pack the shelves with items that are not only important to me but pleasing to the eye.
When you put together a shelf in a bookcase or glass display case do you have a method? Do you just put stuff in it to store or do you place the items so that they create a vignette or tell a story? What’s your story? I bet you’ll never look at a bookcase or bookshelf the same again.
I recently wrote a book about my home called Pieces of Home. The book is coming out in a few weeks and it’s all about the influences in my life and how they inspired me to create a home, that is both comfortable and pleasing to the eye. Every corner in your home should be a reflection of you and who you are and what you love. When you are putting books in a spot or items in place, the way you place them can also add character to your home. So remember to take your time and have fun.
